European football's perennial runner-up: Atlético have lost three finals (1974, 2014 and 2016), the last two to city rivals Real Madrid. The 2014 final slipped away in stoppage time while they led 1-0; the 2016 final went to penalties. Since 2011 the club has been managed by Diego Simeone, who built a combative, defense-first identity — dubbed 'Cholismo' — that has won two La Liga titles. They've played at the Cívitas Metropolitano since 2017.
