Founded in 1924 by Greek refugees who had lived in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), AEK Athens carry that origin in their name — Athlitiki Enosi Konstantinoupoleos, "Athletic Union of Constantinople." Their best-ever European Cup result was the 1968-69 quarterfinals, and the club returns to the Champions League league phase after a long absence from Europe's top-tier club competition.
